Biography and Scientific-Research Activities and Services of Ayatullah Professor Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei, President of the Iranology Foundation

Ayatullah Professor Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei was born on 25 December 1935 into a religious and science-loving family in the holy city of Mashhad. He is related to Imam Sajjad (a) and Imam Hossein (a) through fewer than 30 ancestors. Ayatullah Professor Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei began his education in his hometown. He studied for some time in a maktab-khaneh (old-fashioned primary school) and then attended a private Arabic-medium school. At the same time, he studied religious sciences and Qur’anic concepts under his father. Following his father’s wish, he began his training period to become a clergyman at the age of 12. He studied religious sciences in the Nawwab School of the Seminary of Mashhad under some masters such as Ayatullah Seyyed Muhammad Hadi Milani, Ayatullah Shaykh Hashim Qazwini, and Ayatullah Aqa Mirza Jawad Tehrani.

At the same time as studying the seminary courses, Ayatullah Khamenei also studied modern subjects and graduated from high school during these same years through home-schooling. After obtaining his diploma, he began to learn French and English. In 1955, on the suggestion of some of the scholars of Qum he moved to this city and completed his religious and seminary studies there under some masters such as Ayatullah Burujerdi, Imam Khomeini, Ayatullah Ha’iri Yazdi, Ayatullah Mujahidi Tabrizi, and ‘Allamah Tabataba’i.

Moreover, he was accepted in the course of Judicial Law at the Law Faculty of Tehran University in 1963 and received his BA degree in Law in 1968.

In order to pursue his research on cultural affairs, particularly Islamic philosophy and wisdom, Professor Ayatullah Khamenei established the Sadra Islamic Philosophy Research Institute in 1994 and made it the centre of his scientific activities. In addition to his academic and research activities in the field of Islamic philosophy and gnosis (focusing mainly on Mulla Sadra’s School), he has also published widely in the fields of Islamic law and jurisprudence, sociology, philosophy of women and their rights, and philosophy for children and adolescents in the form of original papers, books, translation, and edited works. He has published more than 100 scientific articles on various topics in several conferences, journals, newspapers, and websites. Professor Ayatullah Khamenei has also taught at some universities such as ‘Allamah Tabataba’i University, the School of International Relations (affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), al-Zahra University, and the Islamic Azad University.

From among his professional, academic, and research activities during the last four decades we can refer to the following: Attorney at law (1350 s AS), member of the Assembly of Experts of the Leadership, representative of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (for two terms), Head of legal, judicial, and some other temporary Commissions of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (during the aforementioned two terms), license-holder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Iranian Affairs (during the 1360’s), President of the Mulla Sadra International Society, license-holder and Director of the specialized Quarterly of History of Philosophy, Director of the specialized Quarterly of History of Philosophy, President of the Iranian House of Wisdom and Philosophy, President of the Iranian Scientific Society of the History of Philosophy, and member of the Institute for Inter-religious Dialogue.

As is acknowledged by experts and authorities in the field of Iranian history and culture, Professor Khamenei is one of the most learned people in the field of the history of the cultural and scientific developments of the land of Iran during recent years. He has conducted some invaluable academic studies on the history of Iran and Iranian philosophy, particularly, during the pre-Islamic period.

As mentioned before, Professor Khamenei is a prolific writer and speaker. From among his works, we can refer to his studies in the field of philosophy and wisdom in pre-Islamic Iran which have been published as Development of Wisdom in Iran and in the World. In his view, in ancient Iran, both Aryan and native Iranian Governments (the Elamite, Caspian, or Manichean civilizations in the central regions of Iran, Kashan, and Kerman) established a rich culture, produced philosophy, science, and art, and disseminated tawhid (monotheism) and ethics. He maintains that the clergymen of that time were among the most prominent scientists in different disciplines and the philosophers of their period. He is one of the scholars who believe in the export of philosophy, civilization, and knowledge from Iran to Greece and who acknowledge Iran as the founder of philosophy and science in the whole world.

Professor Ayatullah Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei was appointed the President of the Iranology Foundation for four years by the order of the ex-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 8 July 2013.
